GOT A STORY TO TELL?

The Shorts is a collection of original short plays performed as part of Lantern Creates. We're looking for fresh ideas, memorable characters and stories that deserve an audience.

Whether you're an experienced writer or trying playwriting for the first time, we'd love to hear from you.

Entries Open

 

Enquiries for Lantern Creates '27 are now open. 

 

The last day for entries is Sunday, 16 August 2026. So get your ideas ready to submit.

YOUR PLAY SHOULD:
  • Be no longer than 15 minutes or six pages in length (one A4 page is roughly one to two minutes of stage time)

  • Have no more than eight performers (characters may be doubled where appropriate)

  • Require no set changes

  • Use minimal props and costumes

  • Be written by a UK-based writer

THEMES

We're open to original work on any subject matter. Where possible, suitability for a broad audience is encouraged, and we aim to create a varied programme of short plays.

If you're looking for inspiration, you may wish to consider one of the following themes:
 

  • Free Choice – any story, any genre, any setting

  • Our Planet, Their Future – stories exploring our relationship with the environment and the world around us

  • Sheffield: Our City History – inspired by Sheffield's people, places and past

  • Under 18 Writers: Something Out There – an opportunity for younger writers to let their imaginations run wild
