A Bold Reimagining by Director Amy Gunn
This autumn, Hamlet takes centre stage at The Lantern in a captivating new adaptation and direction by our very own Amy Gunn. Offering a fresh and emotionally charged take on Shakespeare's iconic tragedy, Amy's vision zeroes in on the themes of death, grief, trauma, and the haunting consequences of our actions. This production is unique in its exploration of how our choices ripple through time, leaving their mark on ourselves and those around us.
Amy's approach has carefully distilled Shakespeare's classic to its emotional core, focusing on Hamlet's journey while bringing the play to a manageable length—half its traditional running time. "Shakespeare's work is so beautifully flexible and adaptable," Amy shares. We are grateful for the ability to offer a well-known story through a different lens." In doing so, Amy has crafted a powerful and intimate production, delivering the same intensity with a more concise narrative.
Our dedicated cast and crew of volunteers have poured their time and talent over the past few months, rehearsing nights and weekends to bring this vision to life. Their commitment and passion have allowed them to balance their busy lives while still doing justice to this extraordinary play. Despite some sacrifices in scenes, the heart of the story remains intact, offering audiences a raw and deeply moving experience.
In this version of Hamlet, you'll see how grief unravels the protagonist, how the ghosts of the past linger, and how trauma shapes not only the world around them but also those connected to them. This is a production that asks us all to consider the weight of our choices and how, even in absence, those we love are always with us.
Whether you're a seasoned Shakespeare fan or coming to Hamlet for the first time, Amy Gunn's reimagining offers a fresh perspective, bringing new life to one of the world's most famous tragedies. It's an opportunity to experience this story in a timeless and immediate way.
